Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Interacts with Navika Sagar Parikrama II Crew on International Women’s Day Eve

New Delhi - On the eve of International Women’s Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh interacted with the crew members of Navika Sagar Parikrama II (NSP II), the two-women naval sailing expedition circumnavigating the globe. The interaction highlighted the government's commitment to promoting gender inclusion in the armed forces and applauded the remarkable contributions of women in maritime operations.

During the interaction, the Defence Minister praised the courage, dedication, and resilience of the NSP II crew, comprising Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A, who undertook this challenging voyage. The crew achieved significant milestones, including crossing Point Nemo—the world's most isolated waters—and navigating the Drake Passage, one of the most treacherous maritime routes.

Symbol of Nari Shakti in Maritime Excellence

Navika Sagar Parikrama II is a flagship initiative of the Indian Navy, symbolising India's dedication to encouraging women’s participation in maritime and defence sectors. The crew underwent rigorous training in navigation, weather management, and ocean survival techniques before setting sail on October 02, 2024, from Goa. The voyage covers 23,400 nautical miles (43,300 km) and is expected to conclude in May 2025 at Goa after reaching Cape Town, South Africa on April 01, 2025.

The expedition aligns with the government’s broader vision of empowering women through various initiatives, including permanent commission opportunities, intake in the National Defence Academy (NDA), and leadership roles in combat and aviation branches.

Empowering Women in Defence

Speaking at the interaction, Rajnath Singh reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to gender inclusivity in the armed forces. “Women officers are breaking new ground in the defence sector, and their contribution is pivotal in safeguarding our nation. The journey of NSP II will inspire countless young women to pursue careers in defence and adventure sports,” he said.

The Ministry of Defence has implemented various policies to promote women’s participation in defence services, reinforcing their role in national security and defence preparedness.

A Beacon of Inspiration

The NSP II expedition serves as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, proving that determination and excellence know no gender. The two-women crew’s extraordinary voyage highlights the growing role of women in India’s defence landscape, setting the stage for greater representation and leadership in the years to come.
