Mohanlal Resigns as AMMA President Amid Mass Resignation of Executive Committee
Fallout from Justice Hema Committee Report and Sexual Misconduct Allegations Leads to Collapse of Malayalam Film Association
Kochi - The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has been rocked by a major upheaval, as Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has stepped down as the association’s president, and all members of the executive committee have submitted their resignations.
This unprecedented move follows the release of the Justice Hema Committee report, which revealed multiple sexual misconduct allegations against several prominent members of AMMA. The revelations have led to a complete overhaul of the association’s leadership.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, AMMA announced, “In light of the serious allegations made against some committee members, the executive committee has decided to disperse on moral grounds. A new committee will be elected within the next two months.”
Resignations include those of vice presidents Jayan Cherthala and Jagadish, joint secretary Baburaj, treasurer Unni Mukundan, and executive committee members Ansiba Hassan, Sarayu Mohan, Vinu Mohan, Tini Tom, Ananya, Suresh Krishna, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jomol, Joy Mathew, and Tovino Thomas. Senior actor Siddique also resigned as general secretary following allegations of rape by a fellow actor.
The mass resignation follows criticism from actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, who condemned AMMA’s inadequate response to survivors’ complaints. His remarks were a direct response to the association’s handling of a complaint by actress Sridevika against director Thulasidas. Prithviraj asserted, “Stronger intervention and actions are needed from AMMA.”
