Tahawwur Rana Interrogation: NIA’s Top Sleuths Dig Deep Into 26/11 Secrets
The men and women behind the mission: Meet the elite NIA team probing Tahawwur Rana’s 26/11 involvement post his extradition from the United States.

Meet the NIA Officers Leading the Charge in Extracting Truth from 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana
New Delhi - India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified its probe into Tahawwur Rana, the alleged conspirator of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, following his extradition from the United States to New Delhi. Currently, the Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman is under the scanner of NIA’s most seasoned investigators, DIG Jaya Roy and IG Ashish Batra.
The two officers, who personally escorted Rana back to India from the US, are now spearheading the interrogation, extracting every detail linked to the 26/11 plot. An elite 12-member team, under their direct supervision, has been tasked with unlocking the terrorist's network and operational secrets.
Who Are The Officers Leading The Probe?
DIG Jaya Roy, a 2011 batch IPS officer from Jharkhand cadre, is renowned for her crackdown on cyber crime syndicates during her posting in Jamtara, famously dubbed "India’s phishing capital." The story of her sharp policing even inspired plots in popular web series based on Jamtara’s cybercrime history. Currently on central deputation with the NIA since 2019, Roy’s clinical approach has earned her a reputation as one of India’s toughest investigators.
IG Ashish Batra, a 1997 batch IPS officer, has an equally formidable track record. Formerly the IG of Jharkhand Jaguar — the state’s elite anti-Naxal force — Batra has experience handling sensitive insurgency and terrorism-related cases. Having joined the NIA in 2018, Batra now holds key responsibility as Inspector General (Operations).
Together, Roy and Batra are determined to uncover every layer of Rana’s involvement in the terror conspiracy that shook India in 2008.
