Karnataka Budget 2025-26 Sparks Controversy: MP Basavaraj Bommai Slams Budget as 'Anti-People'

Bengaluru - The Karnataka Budget 2025-26 presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has drawn sharp criticism from former Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Basavaraj Bommai, who termed the budget ‘anti-people’ and accused the government of burdening citizens without addressing core economic challenges.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Bommai highlighted the budget's failure to deliver on last year's promises, pointing out a ₹10,000 crore shortfall in revenue receipts compared to the previous fiscal projection. He alleged that the budget estimates were manipulated to present a favourable image, concealing the fact that the actual fiscal deficit would exceed 3% of the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), surpassing the projected 2.95%.

Fiscal Health and Rising Debt

Bommai raised concerns over Karnataka's mounting debt, which has now reached ₹7,64,655 crore, amounting to 25% of the GSDP. The MP warned of an impending financial crisis, accusing the state government of mismanaging funds while failing to boost capital expenditure or accelerate economic reforms.

“The government has not delivered on its fiscal promises. The rising debt, coupled with declining capital expenditure, paints a worrying picture of the state's economic health,” Bommai said.

Education and Welfare Cuts

The former CM also criticised the budget for reducing allocations to education (by 2%) and women and child development (by 1%), calling it a setback to the state's social welfare initiatives. He labelled the budget “anti-farmer”, pointing out the lack of special funds for irrigation, rural development, and agriculture—sectors vital for the state's agrarian population.

Regional Disparities

Bommai expressed disappointment over the ₹5,000 crore allocation to the Kittur Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB), terming it inadequate given the region's longstanding demand for increased funding. He added that last year’s funds had not been fully utilised, leaving developmental projects in the region incomplete.

“This budget has neglected Kittur Karnataka’s developmental aspirations. The government has failed to address regional imbalances or announce any special package for the region’s growth,” he remarked.

Opposition Mounts

Bommai's sharp critique has added momentum to opposition voices accusing the Congress-led government of prioritising populist schemes over sustainable development. His remarks are expected to fuel further political debates as the budget is tabled for discussion in the state assembly.
