Indian Navy Prepares for Historic Navika Sagar Parikrama II Expedition

New Delhi – The Indian Navy is set to embark on a remarkable journey with the launch of the second edition of the Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition. A kickoff event was held in New Delhi today, led by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff.

On October 2, 2024, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini will depart from the Naval Ocean Sailing Node at INS Mandovi in Goa, featuring two pioneering women officers, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A. Over the course of eight months, the duo will navigate more than 21,600 nautical miles (approximately 40,000 km) solely using wind power, without any external assistance.

This historic expedition will challenge the officers to traverse some of the world’s most perilous waters, including the notorious routes around Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and the Cape of Good Hope. The mission not only highlights their exceptional courage and skill but also symbolizes the Indian Navy's commitment to women’s empowerment and the spirit of Nari Shakti.

The Navika Sagar Parikrama initiative builds on the inaugural expedition in 2017, which marked the first circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew. This edition will see Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A become the first Indian duo to accomplish such a feat in a double-handed sailing format.

In previous milestones, Captain Dilip Donde was the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2009-10, while Commander Abhilash Tomy became the first Asian skipper to complete the Golden Globe Race in 2022. Cdr Tomy has played a crucial role in mentoring the current officers for their upcoming voyage.

The expedition is organized under the Indian Naval Sailing Association in collaboration with the Naval Headquarters in New Delhi and the Ocean Sailing Node in Goa. Both centers will coordinate with international maritime agencies to ensure a successful journey.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan emphasized that Navika Sagar Parikrama II represents a journey of empowerment and innovation, reaffirming the Indian Navy’s commitment to excellence and responsibility on the high seas.

Both officers expressed their confidence and enthusiasm for the expedition, embodying the resilience and spirit of determination.

Navika Sagar Parikrama II stands as a testament to India’s maritime capabilities and dedication to self-reliance, representing a greater cause that reaches beyond the horizon.
