New Delhi - At the second edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference ‘24, held in New Delhi, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh emphasized India's growing stature as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region, underscoring the Indian Navy's critical role in fostering peace and prosperity.
Rajnath Singh praised the Navy for its proactive measures in safeguarding maritime interests amid rising global volatility. "The Indian Ocean is invaluable for its economic and geopolitical significance," he noted, highlighting that a large portion of global trade transits through these waters. The Minister acknowledged the Navy's achievements in anti-piracy operations and its effectiveness as a first responder in the region, further enhancing India's credibility as a security ally.
“Given the sensitive nature of the region, which faces threats like piracy and drone attacks, our Navy's vigilance is crucial,” he stated. He urged naval commanders to continuously evaluate their strategies and remain prepared for diverse challenges.
Reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernize the Navy, Shri Rajnath Singh revealed that 64 ships and submarines are currently under construction in Indian shipyards, with additional orders for 24 platforms placed to bolster capabilities. “Our focus on indigenization has led to over two-thirds of the Navy’s modernization budget being allocated to domestic procurement in the past five years,” he said, calling for ongoing efforts to achieve self-reliance in defense.
The Raksha Mantri also addressed the importance of joint operations between the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, advocating for enhanced coordination to fortify national maritime security. He attended a tech demonstration showcasing indigenous innovations, including autonomous systems and advanced communications technology.
The Naval Commanders’ Conference serves as a strategic forum for discussing pivotal operational and administrative issues, reflecting the evolving maritime landscape and regional challenges. This biannual event is crucial for shaping the Indian Navy's future trajectory as it strives to maintain its status as a "combat-ready, credible, cohesive, and future-ready force."
