Kochi - In a swift and daring rescue operation on May 21, 2024, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) displayed its unwavering commitment to maritime safety by rescuing 13 distressed fishermen aboard the Fishing Boat Gurvayoorappan (IND-KL-04-MM-1713), 31 nautical miles from Chavakkad, Kerala.
Responding to a distress call reporting sea water ingress in the engine compartment of the fishing boat, the ICG Ship Abhinav, on patrol off the Kerala coast, was immediately diverted to the scene by the Maritime Rescue Sub Center, Kochi.
Upon arrival, the ICG launched a boarding party with a technical team to assess the situation. They discovered a 4-inch hole in the hull, causing rapid flooding in the engine room. Acting swiftly, the team conducted a rigorous de-flooding operation using submersible pumps and successfully stopped the ingress of water by applying Quick Damage Control measures.
Thanks to the timely and efficient response of the ICG, despite challenging weather conditions, the boat's machinery was operationalized, and the lives of all 13 crew members were saved. The distressed Fishing Boat Gurvayoorappan was escorted safely to Munambam, where it entered the harbor on the night of May 21, 2024.
This daring rescue operation once again underscores the Indian Coast Guard's dedication to maritime safety and reinforces its motto, "Vayam Rakshamah," meaning "We Protect."
