Railways Upgrade Loco Pilots’ Facilities After Decades of Neglect

New Delhi - In a landmark push for better crew welfare, Indian Railways has significantly improved working conditions for its loco pilots over the last decade. From upgrading air-conditioned running rooms to revamping locomotive cabs and adding much-needed onboard toilets, the country’s largest transporter is actively redefining the work environment for its rail warriors.

Zero to All: Running Rooms Go Fully Air-Conditioned

Before 2014, not a single running room — the resting facility for train crew — was air-conditioned. Today, every running room in the country has been upgraded with air conditioning and modern furnishing, offering loco pilots much-needed rest during their duties on India’s vast rail network.

Loco Cabs Transformed for Comfort and Efficiency

Loco cabs have seen a huge shift from old designs to modern, ergonomic workplaces. More than 50% of the cabs are now fitted with air conditioning, cushioned ergonomic seats, and other crew-friendly features. Notably, no locomotive cab was air-conditioned before 2014.

Toilets Finally a Standard Feature in Locomotives

In a major design upgrade, all new locomotives manufactured are now fitted with toilets — a basic yet long-overdue facility that was absent from production plans until 2014. Older locomotives are being progressively retrofitted to include this essential amenity, backed by thoughtful design modifications.

Safety Gets a Tech Boost: Kavach, Fog Devices & More

Indian Railways has deployed advanced safety technologies such as fog safety devices, Kavach (anti-collision system), enhanced driver alert systems, and improved braking mechanisms — all aimed at protecting loco pilots and passengers alike.

Planned Breaks for Rest and Refreshments

For goods train pilots, station halts at yards and junctions offer ample time for refreshments and toilet breaks. In suburban services, crews use terminal stations for restroom access, while passenger train pilots utilise onboard train toilets when stationed at platforms.

Railways’ Commitment to Crew Welfare

From ensuring better rest hours to building new running rooms along congested routes, Indian Railways has methodically improved work-life balance for its loco pilots. The efforts are ongoing, with further upgrades planned as part of the rail network's modernisation drive.
