Indian Railways Breaks Record with Over 7,000 Coaches Produced in FY25
Modernization, safety, and passenger comfort at the heart of Indian Railways’ coach boom, Make in India on Fast Track: Indian Railways Hits Historic Coach Production Milestone

New Delhi - Indian Railways has achieved a landmark in its journey towards modernization and self-reliance, manufacturing a record-breaking 7,134 passenger coaches in the financial year 2024–25, reflecting a robust 9% increase over the previous year. The achievement underscores the national transporter’s commitment to enhancing travel comfort, expanding capacity, and strengthening the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The rise in production — up from 6,541 coaches in FY 2023–24 — includes a notable increase in non-A/C coaches, with 4,601 units produced to serve the travel needs of the common man. This balance of affordability and expansion mirrors Indian Railways’ broader goal of inclusive infrastructure growth.
The manufacturing efforts were led by three key production units:
- Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai – produced 3,007 coaches, the highest among the trio.
- Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala – contributed 2,102 coaches.
- Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Rae Bareli – delivered 2,025 coaches.
These gains mark a transformative decade in coach manufacturing. Between 2004 and 2014, annual coach production averaged below 3,300. From 2014 to 2024, Indian Railways has produced over 54,809 coaches, averaging 5,481 per year — a testament to policy reforms, investment in infrastructure, and a renewed focus on domestic capability.
Beyond the numbers, this progress represents a qualitative leap in public transport. The newly manufactured coaches are equipped with enhanced safety mechanisms, modern designs, and energy-efficient systems — forming the backbone of a more agile and future-ready rail network.
As India pushes forward with Railway electrification, high-speed corridors, and smarter passenger amenities, this coach production boom will be pivotal in delivering reliable, comfortable, and accessible travel to millions.
