New Delhi- An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent participated in Exercise Red Flag 2024, held at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, from June 4 to June 14, 2024. This marks the second edition of Red Flag 2024, an advanced aerial combat training exercise conducted by the United States Air Force (USAF) four times annually. The event saw the participation of air forces from India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and the USA.

The IAF deployed Rafale aircraft and a team comprising aircrew, technicians, engineers, controllers, and subject matter experts. The transatlantic journey of the Rafale fighters was facilitated by IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuellers, while personnel and equipment were transported via C-17 Globemaster aircraft. The IAF contingent arrived at Eielson AFB on May 29, 2024.

Red Flag provides a realistic combat setting with scenarios that divide forces into Red Force, simulating Air Defence elements, and Blue Force, representing Offensive Composite elements. The USAF Aggressor Squadron, flying F-16 and F-15 aircraft, constituted the Red Force.

This year marked the first participation of IAF's Rafale aircraft in Red Flag, operating alongside RSAF and USAF F-16s and F-15s, and USAF A-10 aircraft. Missions included Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat exercises as part of Large Force Engagements (LFE), focusing on Offensive Counter Air and Air Defence roles. IAF personnel were integral to mission planning and took on leadership roles during designated missions.

Despite challenging weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures, the IAF maintenance crew ensured the aircraft remained serviceable, with over 100 sorties completed. The exercise emphasized interoperability with international partners and provided valuable experience in long-distance ferrying and Air-to-Air refuelling.

The IAF contingent will split their return journey to participate in exercises with the air forces of Greece and Egypt before returning to India on June 24, 2024. Following this enriching experience, the IAF anticipates hosting its first multinational air exercise, Ex-Tarang Shakti-2024, later this year.
