Bengaluru’s US Consulate: A Landmark in India-US Relations

New Delhi - Bengaluru, India's tech capital and innovation powerhouse, has achieved a historic milestone with the establishment of a US Consulate in the city. This long-awaited development symbolizes a new era of India-US diplomatic and economic relations, underscoring Bengaluru's global importance.

The journey toward this realization began in 2006, when Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy proposed the idea, recognizing Bengaluru’s strategic role in technology and innovation. Despite setbacks during the UPA regime, which temporarily diverted the consulate to another state, Kumaraswamy reignited the effort in 2018 as Karnataka’s Chief Minister. Discussions with then-US Ambassador Kenneth Juster played a pivotal role in placing Bengaluru back on the global diplomatic map.

“This achievement is a culmination of years of persistence and collaborative efforts,” said Kumaraswamy, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar for their leadership and support in making this vision a reality.

The US Consulate in Bengaluru is poised to strengthen ties in technology, trade, education, and innovation between India and the United States. It marks a significant step toward India’s vision of "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047, with Bengaluru as a central player in this transformation.

Kumaraswamy lauded the collective efforts of leaders and stakeholders, stating, “Bengaluru’s growth as a global tech leader is now matched by its status as a diplomatic hub. This is a proud moment for the city and the nation.”
