Political Standoff in Maharashtra Ends: Eknath Shinde Steps Down, Devendra Fadnavis Likely to Become CM
With Shinde’s withdrawal, BJP sets the stage for a new leadership, potentially with Fadnavis at the helm, as two Deputy CMs are expected.
Mumbai - The political uncertainty in Maharashtra has finally come to an end as Eknath Shinde stepped down from the Chief Minister’s race, clearing the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appoint a new leader for the state. As the speculation around the CM candidate continues, sources suggest that BJP may either choose Devendra Fadnavis or introduce a new face, potentially surprising the political landscape. Additionally, in line with the political developments in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, two Deputy Chief Ministers are expected to be appointed in Maharashtra.
In a press conference held in Thane, Eknath Shinde, the Shiv Sena leader, publicly relinquished his claim to the Chief Minister's position, reaffirming his loyalty to the BJP. "I spoke to Prime Minister Modi and assured him that there are no differences between us. I have no desire for the position of Chief Minister. We are all part of the NDA, and whatever decision is made, we will accept it," Shinde stated. He further emphasized that he viewed himself not as a CM candidate, but as a common man who was grateful for the support of the people.
Shinde’s Support for Mahayuti
Shinde also conveyed his commitment to the larger political alliance, saying, "I am not among those who will sulk. I am a fighter. I will work till my last breath for Maharashtra. Whatever decision is taken in the interest of Mahayuti (grand alliance), we will not oppose it."
Fadnavis's Growing Support
As the BJP prepares to fill the CM post, Devendra Fadnavis is seen as the front-runner. Sources suggest that Fadnavis’s strong leadership and unwavering loyalty to the party have positioned him as the likely candidate for the top post. His performance in the recent elections, where BJP secured significant support, is seen as a key factor for his probable elevation. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is also reportedly backing him for the CM role.
Political Journey of Devendra Fadnavis
Devendra Fadnavis, a seasoned politician, began his career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1989, during his college years. He entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1999, and after several terms, became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 2014 at the age of 44. Despite his earlier tenure with the Shiv Sena, Fadnavis led the BJP to a remarkable victory, increasing their seat count significantly from 46 to 122 in the 2014 elections. He remains the second youngest CM in the state's history after Sharad Pawar.
BJP’s Major Victory in Maharashtra
In the latest elections, the Mahayuti alliance, which includes BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and Ajit Pawar's faction, won 230 out of 288 seats. BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats, followed by the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena with 57 seats, and the Ajit Pawar faction with 41 seats. Meanwhile, the opposition alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi, secured 46 seats, with Congress winning only 16.
Fadnavis's Victory and Popularity
Devendra Fadnavis secured a major win in the Nagpur South West constituency, defeating Congress’s Prafulla Gudhe by a margin of over 1.29 lakh votes, with a 56.55% vote share. His strong performance in his home constituency further strengthens his position as a potential CM candidate.
As the political landscape in Maharashtra continues to evolve, all eyes are on the BJP’s next move and how the leadership will be structured in the state to address the challenges ahead.
