KKR’s Pitch Controversy Sparks Heated Debate; Harsha Bhogle Calls Home Advantage ‘Legitimate’
Simon Doull questions Eden Gardens curator’s stance, suggests KKR should consider relocation.

Harsha Bhogle Backs Home Advantage Amid KKR Pitch Controversy
Kolkata - The Indian Premier League (IPL) is no stranger to controversies, but the latest debate surrounding the Eden Gardens pitch has drawn significant attention. The issue erupted after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed his preference for a spin-friendly surface at Eden Gardens following their season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22nd. However, his request was met with resistance from pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee, who made it clear that he alone would dictate the nature of the playing surface.
The dispute quickly escalated, with KKR fans voicing their displeasure, arguing that the home team should have a say in pitch conditions. The controversy also sparked discussions among cricket experts, who largely sided with the franchise’s stance.
Harsha Bhogle and Simon Doull Weigh In
Prominent cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle addressed the issue on Cricbuzz Live, emphasizing that home advantage is a fundamental aspect of any league competition, including the IPL.
“Home advantage in a tournament like the IPL is absolutely legitimate and that will enhance the tournament because then winning away becomes so crucial,” Bhogle stated.
Drawing a parallel to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), he pointed out that teams traditionally build strategies around their home conditions. He cited a post-match scenario where CSK players Ravichandran Ashwin and Vijay Shankar were observed discussing the surface with the groundsmen at Chepauk.
“You must have home advantage, and that’s very good to have,” he added.
Meanwhile, former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Simon Doull was more direct in his criticism of the curator’s stance. He questioned whether KKR’s franchise fees justified their expectation of a pitch tailored to their strengths.
“Does KKR not pay the stadium fees? If the curator isn’t paying heed to what the home team wants, then just move your franchise away, move it elsewhere,” Doull remarked.
KKR Bounces Back with Dominant Win
Despite the controversy, KKR showed resilience on the field, securing an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Wednesday. With momentum on their side, they now face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 31st before returning to Eden Gardens for a crucial clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad—a rematch of last year’s final.
