India and China Seek Stronger Ties: Raksha Mantri Meets Chinese Defence Minister at ASEAN Summit

Vientiane - Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh met Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun on November 20, 2024, in Vientiane, Lao PDR, during the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus. This marks their first meeting since recent disengagement agreements and the BRICS summit dialogue between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping.

Highlighting the significance of India-China relations, Shri Singh stated, "Amicable ties between the world's two largest nations will positively impact global peace and prosperity." Stressing the importance of avoiding conflict, he urged both sides to focus on cooperation and reflect on lessons from the 2020 border clashes to ensure lasting peace along the shared border.

Both ministers agreed on steps to build trust, including de-escalation measures and a roadmap for strengthening mutual understanding. Shri Singh also emphasized safeguarding tranquility along the border while fostering confidence between the nations.

Shri Singh is on a three-day visit to Vientiane, where he will address the ADMM-Plus summit on November 21, discussing regional and international security issues.
