Trending Toward History: DC Aims for Third Straight WPL Final Appearance

Lucknow - The Delhi Capitals, co-owned by JSW and GMR, are on the brink of scripting history as they eye a direct spot in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 final for the third consecutive year. With one league-stage match remaining against Gujarat Giants on Friday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, the Capitals are determined to maintain their top spot on the points table and secure their passage straight into the final.

Already assured of a playoff berth, Head Coach Jonathan Batty emphasized the importance of finishing on top. "It's one of the great things about this five-team tournament that the sides are really well-balanced. We got that playoffs qualification, which was the first tick in the box. But the job isn't done yet. We are keeping our focus on our game against Gujarat Giants on Friday night, which leaves our fate in our own hands."

Rested and Recharged

The Capitals head into the crucial fixture after a short break following back-to-back matches against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Batty acknowledged the demanding schedule, stating, "We were very front-loaded with our games, especially during the Bengaluru leg. Players' workload is something that we have to take care of to avoid injuries. The break helped us recharge and have a couple of heavy training sessions before our last group game."

Charani Shines on Debut

One of the standout performers in DC's campaign has been young N Sree Charani. The 20-year-old all-rounder impressed on her debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, picking up two crucial wickets. Batty praised the rising star, saying, "We had our eyes on her since last season when our scouts flagged her to us. She’s been hugely impressive during the pre-season camp, and it's good to see the kind of performance she put up on her debut. She's always got a smile on her face."

Formidable Opponents

The Gujarat Giants, currently second on the points table, come into the match fresh from a dominant victory over UP Warriorz. Batty acknowledged the challenge posed by the Giants, stating, "Gujarat Giants are incredibly strong. They have got a wonderful batting line-up, and restricting their batters will be the key to the game."

With a win on Friday, Delhi Capitals will book a direct berth in the WPL 2025 final, reaffirming their dominance in women's cricket.

The Delhi Capitals franchise competes in both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Established in 2008 as Delhi Daredevils before rebranding in 2019, the team is co-owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group. Delhi Capitals made their maiden IPL final appearance in 2020. The women’s team has consistently been a force in the WPL, finishing runners-up in both 2023 and 2024.
