Shakib Al Hasan Accused of Murder in Bangladesh Student Protest

Dhaka - Bangladesh's cricketing icon Shakib Al Hasan finds himself at the center of a major controversy as he has been accused in a murder case linked to recent student protests in Dhaka. Shakib, considered one of the greatest cricketers in the country’s history, is among 156 individuals implicated in the killing of Mohammad Rubel, a textile trader who was shot during a demonstration on August 5.

The case has taken a dramatic turn with Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filing a First Information Report (FIR) at Adabor Police Station on August 22. The FIR names not only Shakib Al Hasan but also includes Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 154 local Awami League workers. Additionally, the report mentions 400-500 unidentified individuals in connection with the case.

According to reports, Rubel was involved in a peaceful protest in the Adabor area when the demonstration allegedly turned violent. Eyewitnesses claim that protesters were shot at, resulting in Rubel sustaining two gunshot wounds to his chest, which led to his death the following day.

As Shakib participates in a Test match against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, the charges against him have sparked widespread concern. Shakib has been listed as accused number 28 in the charge sheet, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board has issued a warning, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The unfolding legal drama marks one of the most unexpected and significant controversies involving a top sports figure in Bangladesh.
