Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness Worries Loom Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 Selection
India’s Star Pacer Consults Leading Surgeon Amid Concerns Over His Injury; Former Cricketer Mohammed Kaif Suggests Caution in Naming Him Test Captain
New Delhi - As the countdown begins for the 2025 Champions Trophy, India’s star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, is facing growing concerns about his fitness. Bumrah, who recently played a crucial role in India's dramatic victory against Australia, is reportedly suffering from a back strain. The bowler has undergone an X-ray, and sources suggest he is on the brink of being ruled out of the upcoming England series.
In a new development, Bumrah consulted renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Scouten from New Zealand regarding his injury. According to reports, "The surgeon is in contact with the BCCI’s medical team, and the selectors will be informed soon about Bumrah’s fitness status." The report further claimed that Bumrah is likely to be included in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, but only if he is fully pain-free and ready to bowl at full capacity.
Amid these fitness concerns, former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has raised doubts about Bumrah’s potential to take over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma. Kaif expressed concerns about the added pressure on Bumrah, arguing that it could affect his fitness and career longevity. "Bumrah is a vital asset to the Indian bowling attack, and the added burden of captaincy might take a toll on him," Kaif said. He suggested that players like KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant, who have a natural leadership mindset, could bring stability and consistency to the team.
Kaif emphasized that the BCCI should be cautious before appointing Bumrah as a full-time captain, as the extra responsibility might lead to more injuries or a shortened career. “Bumrah should focus on his fitness and wicket-taking ability, rather than taking on the captaincy burden at this stage,” he added.
As Bumrah’s recovery journey continues, cricket fans across India eagerly await updates on his fitness, while the team’s selection for the Champions Trophy remains a key point of interest.
