India Serves Big: Billie Jean King Cup Returns to Pune

Pune set to host Asia-Oceania Group I as young fans get front-row seats to elite tennis.

Pune - The prestigious Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I is all set to take place in Pune, and India will be represented by a confident and well-rounded women’s team led by seasoned tennis professional Ankita Raina. Joining India in the group are top teams from Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, and Thailand.

Ranked World No. 300 in singles as of March-end, Ankita Raina expressed her excitement and pride about playing the tournament on home soil. “I’m thrilled that the Billie Jean King Cup games are being held in Pune. It's an honour to lead India once again. I’ve been part of the national squad for over a decade, and it still feels like a dream to represent the country,” she said.

High-Calibre Tennis at Home Turf

Raina stressed how hosting a tournament of this magnitude in India could positively impact the nation’s tennis ecosystem. “This event is conducted at the highest level and will provide youngsters the opportunity to watch world-class athletes live. We are grateful to the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association for bringing this event to India,” she added.

Ankita leads a five-member team including Sahaja Yamalapalli, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Vaidehi Chaudhari, and Prarthana Thombare, with rising star Maaya Rajeshwaran as the reserve.

Team India: United by Purpose

Discussing the team dynamics, Raina remarked, “Representing India brings out the best in every athlete. Travelling together for such tournaments builds camaraderie and enhances our team performance. We’re committed to giving it our all.”

When asked about managing pressure during matches, Raina shared how meditation has been pivotal. “I began meditating at around 18 or 20. It helped me transition from junior to senior-level tennis, particularly in handling pressure and maintaining calm in critical match moments.”

Stiff Competition Awaits

While India is optimistic, Raina remains realistic about the challenges. “Every team in this group has top-notch players. I played against Lulu Sun of New Zealand last year — she went on to qualify for Wimbledon and reached the semi-finals. That’s the calibre of competition we’re facing,” she noted.
