Is Jasprit Bumrah India’s Next Test Captain?

Cricket Legend Sunil Gavaskar and Ricky Ponting Weigh in on Bumrah’s Leadership Potential

Is Jasprit Bumrah India’s Next Test Captain?

Bengaluru-  In a revelation that has stirred excitement among cricket enthusiasts, former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has hinted at Jasprit Bumrah as India’s next Test captain. Speaking on Channel Seven, Gavaskar highlighted Bumrah’s composed leadership style, describing him as a natural choice for the role.

“He could very well be the next Test captain. Bumrah leads with calm authority, ensuring his players perform without feeling pressured. His ability to guide teammates, especially as a fast bowler, is remarkable,” Gavaskar remarked.

Bumrah’s leadership came into focus during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he captained India in two matches. Despite a series loss, Bumrah’s exceptional performance—32 wickets in five matches at an average of 13.06—earned him the “Player of the Series” title. Gavaskar believes Bumrah could have turned the tide during the Sydney Test had he bowled in the final innings.

Ponting’s Take: Bumrah as India’s Pat Cummins?

Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting has also voiced his support for Bumrah, drawing parallels to Pat Cummins, Australia’s highly successful Test captain.

“Just like Pat, Bumrah has the traits of a leader—calm under pressure and a strong performer across formats. He could be the key to India’s success in the longer format,” Ponting stated.

Ponting further shared insights from Steve Smith, who described Bumrah as one of the most challenging bowlers to face due to his unpredictable cues and unique style.

“When someone like Smith admits struggling to read Bumrah’s deliveries, it’s clear he’s a special player. Bumrah’s ability to exploit challenging conditions makes him an asset,” Ponting added.
