Bengaluru -: Veteran cricketer Dinesh Karthik praised the Indian Premier League (IPL) for revolutionizing Indian cricket, enhancing its competitive edge, and strengthening infrastructure. Speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit Powered by Leaders at the Padukone Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence, he engaged in an insightful discussion with Mo Bobat, Director of Cricket, RCB, and former England cricketer Isa Guha on Friday.
IPL’s Influence on Indian Cricket’s Winning Mindset
Karthik emphasized how the IPL has instilled a winning mentality in Indian players. "The IPL has changed the mindset of Indian cricket completely. The financial influx has helped teams, stakeholders, and infrastructure grow. Better infrastructure ultimately improves the quality of the sport," he stated.
He further pointed out that the IPL has created a talent pool deep enough for India to field multiple international teams. "Today, India can send two to three competitive teams at the same time, which speaks volumes about our cricketing depth. It’s a privileged position to be in, with cricketers mastering diverse skill sets," he added.
Lessons from IPL’s Early Years: Glenn McGrath’s Influence
Recalling his early IPL days, Karthik shared his experience of playing alongside Australian legend Glenn McGrath. "Back then, Australia played with a ruthless winning mentality, which was a culture shock for many of us. In my first IPL season, spending time with Glenn McGrath up close, practicing, and understanding his approach gave me immense confidence. It changed my outlook on competing with the best," he explained.
